Philosophy and Theology Posts from Around

I haven’t got my sidebar finished yet. (Hopefully this week) In the meantime I figured I’d have a “best of” set of links. I’ve not yet had time to start reading philosophy blogs again. So these are mainly posts I’ve found interesting among LDS oriented blogs.

M* is back among the better living. It was kind of on life support for much of the same time this blog was defunct. It’s back and is using Wordpress (like I am). The server is still a bit overloaded. So be aware that sometimes it’s more of a pain to get online than it should be.

Anyway I had two posts over there making the argument that the doctrine of the Trinity and LDS belief are not incompatible. I had a follow up post demonstrating this through Orson Pratt and the Trinity. I had one other post in mind for a series of criticisms a mainstream orthodox Christian might make towards Mormons and the Trinity. However they are a tad complex so I might put that post here instead.

Geoff and Jacob over at New Cool Thang had an other post of their ongoing series on free will and Mormonism. This one raised the question of whether animals have free will. I think that definitions became a tad too muddled though. I think Geoff didn’t keep separated the issue of morally relevant free will from ontological questions of free will proper. So a lot of the comments are due to confusions on those issues.

For those interested in issues of memory or post-Heidegger phenomenology there’s a reading club of Ricoeur’s Memory, History, Forgetting. My copy of the book arrived a few days ago. It’s a huge tome and I seem to be reading it a bit slower than everyone else. Still many of you might wish to go to LDS Herm and check it out.

The FAIR Blog had a great post on restoring the Masonic Lodge in Nauvoo. Unfortunately a troll ruined the comments after a while.

FAIR also announced their 2008 Conference dates. I wasn’t able to make it last year. I hope I’m able to this year.

The Juvenile Instructor is one of my favorite new blogs. (It’s funny how many big LDS blogs name themselves after 19th century LDS newspapers) There was a great series on the influence of William James on B. H. Roberts. (I, II, and III) They also had a good post on the infinite regress theory of God in LDS theology. This is a big issue with Blake’s book that I’m sure will get discussed this month at the SMPT conference. There were also a few posts on Emerson and LDS thought. (Ben’s and Heidi’s) I made a few comments there since I think the parallels between the transcendentalists like Emerson and early Mormonism tends to get overstated. Focusing in on the philosophical differences is important.
