Misc LDS Stuff

Two quick miscellaneous posts. The first is a Book of Mormon survey. (Sorry I kept forgetting to mention it) This was discussed at BCC last week. There’s one counterfactual question I’m a bit iffy on. But other than that it sounds like an interesting survey on how Mormons view the Book of Mormon.

The other news came from an email I suspect most LDS bloggers got. It is for a new LDS news portal called LDS News Source. I was a bit skeptical when I read the email but looking at the site it actually looks like it does a good job. It’d probably be a good site to generate fodder for blog poss as well.

Thanks for the links. I agree that the LDS News Source looks good, although I am totally turned off by their current poll which asks, “Who is your favorite deceased prophet?”

I got the same pitch from LDS News Source. I don’t see the point. The aggregation isn’t that great (it’s mainly Mormon Times and DMN articles) even though it says that it’s pulling from 5000 sources. There’s no commentary to go with the links so there’s no added value from the people behind the site. It’s basically symptomatic of a lot of these types of sites that have started up over the years — using other people’s content to try and win some ad dollars and/or affiliate sales commissions.

My impression was that the were doing a Google keyword search and then putting up the most relevant and best story. If they can maintain it then I’m all for it. I’ve not found the automatically generated rss feeds to be terribly good in terms of news services.

There were a couple questions on the survey which didn’t follow good survey practice. I can’t recall the questions right now, but there was one where there were two opinions concatenated by a comma, and you could either agree with part a or part b of the set up, and it didn’t follow that you had to agree with both. Outside of that, I’m interested to see the results. I was pretty amused that before JNS posted it, I’d already received two e-mails regarding the survey…

Yeah, as I said there was one counterfactual question that was pretty bad. First off counterfactual questions are problematic to begin with and hard to do well. But second this one was terribly confusing and I’m still not sure what the question meant. The tricky ones were some quotes that seemed designed to sound like the NT (or vice versa) but which weren’t the ones we usually quote.
