LDS Philosophy Blogs

Just a note on some Mormon philosophy blogs. I keep meaning to mention them.

First up the group blog Latter-day Saint Philosopher which is a group blog. I don’t know much about them but they’ve had some interesting posts and I’ve been commenting a fair bit. It’s also seemingly targeting a more introductory audience without getting super technical. One series they’ve been doing relates to agency and free will - the ever popular topic.

Next up is Jacob Hawken’s Philosophy Blog. It tends to not get updated that frequently. (Basically only three posts since April) We’ll see if it survives.

Finally there is Small and Simple. This isn’t really a philosophy blog and the author isn’t a philosopher. But he’s been doing a series on McMurrin’s book on Mormonism and Philosophy. Probably a nice read if you’re looking for very introductory discussions. (I need to watch my jargon)

Oh, I should mention LDS-Herm although sadly that’s been dead since spring.

There may be a few others but those will do for now.

If you have a philosophy oriented LDS blog please let me know. I need to put together a blog roll one of these days. I’d love there to be more that deal with the more technical discussions in particular. I know there are a lot of LDS philosophers out there and LDS-Phil and the LDS-Herm mailing list have gusts of discussion. (Going by past history things should pick up when school starts)

Wow. Thanks for the link man.

Thanks for these links, Clark.

I really like the Latter-day Saint Philosopher blog. I think their blog is great for “taking philosophy to the people,” so to speak. Jeff and Nathan are both very much informed by theoretical psychologists at BYU (Brent Slife, Ed Gantt, and Richard Williams). I know this because I am also very much informed by this tradition. Jake Hawken was in my William James class and is a philosophy major at BYU. Very smart guy, but he doesn’t write too much.

I should say that Jeff, Nathan, and Jake are listed as authors on my blog, Thinking in a Marrow Bone (TMB), though they don’t post often. TMB includes posts on philosophy-related topics and hopes to do more in the future. It has been dominated by politics recently; that will likely change after the election.
