WP on whether Glenn Beck's rise is good for Mormonism. It's a mixed bag. It seems to reduce the animosity by some Evangelicals towards us but inflames more liberals towards us. He's definitely not representative of us, from what I can see. But then who is?

Levi reads Glenn Beck in light of the Stoics. I know next to nothing about Beck's actual beliefs beyond his being highly influenced by Skousen's conspiracy theories from the 50's (and perhaps Skousen's theology?). BTW - I mean to reply to Levi's post on Peirce and OOP but just have been swamped.

New Scientist has an article on biosemiotics. It's pretty interesting and avoids a lot of the hyperbole NS sometimes falls prey to. I really think Peircean styled semiotics will be the wave of the 21st century. In many ways OOP is just retracing his steps (albeit with slightly different metaphysics in some cases).

Human nature is depressing. Doing good viewed as bad. This seems like a pretty obvious and common fact about human behavior to me. It's not the only aspect to human nature though but heaven knows we have some bad instincts.

NYT on the alternatives to the normal journal & peer review route. Weird they didn't mention arxiv which is the physics paper repository site. That was started at Los Alamos way back in 1991. It switched names and location to Cornell in 1999. The humanities are johnny come latelies to all this.
