Reading Nephi Reading Isaiah

A few others have mentioned this but I thought I’d put it up for those who only frequent my blog. On April 15th in the basement of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU is the “Reading Nephi Reading Isaiah” conference. This is part of the Mormon Theology Seminar and is co-hosted by Jim Faulconer. [...]

Incommensurability

Incommensurability as the key to metaphysics. Going not to Kuhn but back to Kant. Interesting idea.

DARPA

Darpa’s plans to regrow limbs. This is actually advancing much faster than I expected.

Brandon on Definitions

Brandon on definitions. Relevant for some discussions I’ve been in.

Hume

Brandon on Hume’s Religion

Philosophers on Twitter

List of philosophers on Twitter. I’m following way too many…

More Human Evolution

More contemporary human evolution with signals of recent positive selection. I’m a sucker for these sorts of stories and I like the analysis of false positives which is important to consider. Also some other analysis at Genetic Future.

NPR

NPR on the Big Love controversy.

San Francisco

Just a note. The reason there haven’t been any posts this week is because I’m in San Francisco. I’ll be back Monday and likely posting.

It’s from a few years ago but I accidentally came upon it again and had forgotten how much I liked it the first time. Charles Guignon has a nice little section [...]

Watchmen

Watchmen‘s Dr. Manhattan and the Mormon concept of deity. Kind of interesting take at the American Spectator I enjoyed. I think that despite everyone saying how philosophically interesting Dr. Manhattan is that it’s actually a fairly superficial engagement with the issue of time. (At least in the comic – I’ve not seen the movie yet)

Structure of Religiosity

Structure of religiosity and its neural substrates. (corrected link) Religious belief broken up into three factors then analyzed with fMRI.

Consciousness

Consciousness and anesthesia. An other great article by Zimmer.

Banning Open Access

Banning Open Access. It’s an interesting question about whether taxpayer funded research should be open.

Big Love

BCC analyzes the Big Love controversy about showing the temple ceremony. Also see the comments in the live blogging of the show. I didn’t watch but oddly what bothered me most in the accounts was the character being booted out of the temple after 15 minutes.
