What I’m Reading

I’m working through Badiou’s Being and Event. Adam Miller suggested it. (Although I think in part so he could have an interlocutor on some issues) Adam and I have been discussing Grace a lot on LDS-Herm. Adam has an interesting book out on the topic. It’s not LDS in the least. It’s Badiou, Marion and St. Paul: Immanent Grace.
Badiou wrote an interesting treatise on grace in Paul although using it for secular purposes. Adam opposes Badiou to Derrida. I tend to favor the Derrida/Heidegger side of things. Although to the degree I dare say I understand the disagreement it is a subtle one. Adam wants to see grace as the gift in everything. Literally all materialism is grace. I tend to see grace (or the gift) as what escapes the system. The eruption into matter what was not there. (A much more Derridean perspective) But while I’ve read part of Adam’s book I really have to come to grips with Badiou to understand what is going on.
I’ve only made it through the first chapter. I’ve already found a bit to disagree with. But I like the idea of someone engaging analytic philosophy more formally and using set theory and transfinite numbers. We’ll see how it goes. Hopefully I’ll understand him better than I have Davidson.
With Davidson I’m returning back to his foundational ontology. I should have a post up soon on that as that’s where I think all my misunderstandings converge.
