Volokh on SSM & religious liberty. Worth reading. I think the evidence is overwhelming that any major conflicts just aren’t there.

As I said on that Prop 82 thread a few months back, I think many religious people see it as a state imposition on a religious symbol. Sort of as if the state starts regulating religious acts. That’s not to deny some people draw more conspiratorial or silly implications. But as I’ve long said I think the state should just get out of the marriage business entirely. Have civil unions only.

I agree, the presumed conflict between SSM and religious liberty is non-existent. So why are so many (religious) people against it, since it would cause them no hardship?
