Too Many Students?

Are too many students going to college? I’m mixed on this. I understand that only 10-15 percent of the population have the ability to get a B or higher in college. And I think seeing college purely as job training is bad. But I think a lot of “intangibles” are taught in college which lead to better citizens. Could they be taught in high school? I don’t know. Perhaps. But clearly they aren’t.

Why not shoot for more technical colleges that teach those intangibles?

Changing who goes to University really does affect many of the intangibles which end up being taught & learned. One of the challenges though, is how to create a society geared towards and optimized for a knowledge based society.

I think there are some rather significant strategical choices that have been made which we see being played out in the funding, structures, and expectations in this area.

In making this shift, I can’t help but assume things will shift a bit too far to the inclusionary side of things before it settles back down. I just don’t think you can create the momentum necessary for such changes without some serious overshoot.
