The way the bill that passed the House stands now, if cap and trade ultimately passes, the oil and coal companies are going to make out like bandits, because they were granted massive exemptions (emission credits) to a steep marginal tax that is going to apply to everyone else. It is no accident that Duke Energy, one of the largest coal users in the world, is a big fan.

While I think the oil and coal companies are doing something similar to what tobacco tried in the 70's I don't really think that explains most denialism. I really think that it was unfortunate how it got politicized with questions of solutions so conflated with the questions of the existence of global warming. But I also think how supporters dealt with the issue was often unfortunate.

Probably not. But remember the main parties trying to throw doubt into the equation--oil and coal companies and the men who lead them. With oil and coal companies involved, I think it likely it would've been politicized even without Al Gore.
