“Reasonable religious disagreement and the private evidence problem” Great post by Clayton on the epistemological difference between atheists and theists based upon religious experience. Well worth reading since this is key to Mormon epistemological claims.

Heidegger and Nazism (Again)

Heidegger’s Nazism arose by his return to Hegelian or Kantian idealism. I’m not sure I buy this but I don’t really know enough about the issues to debate it. It is an interesting thesis though. What was bad in Heidegger was a return to what he was overcoming.

Chimp Communication

Chimp communication. Interestingly the chips respond to the calls if recorded. I’m not sure it counts as language per se though. But I guess that gets at what language is.

Heidegger’s Realism

Heidegger’s Realism at Minds and Brains. Although he doesn’t get into the debate about what kind of realism. He quotes a lot of the same prooftexts as Dreyfus.

Dreyfus on Deworlding

Dreyfus on Heidegger and Deworlding (rtf) A little dated in the realist debate but worth reading.

Two Realisms

Two kinds of realism. I actually think there are more than this. I’ll probably comment in more depth later.

Derrida on Revealability and Revelation

Derrida on ‘revealability’ (‘Offenbarkeit’) and ‘revelation’ (‘Offenbarung’) (YouTube Video)

Where Did Warming go

Nice graph to counter all those silly “it’s record cold here” attacks on global warming. (Yes Drudge, I’m looking at you) While the US is colder other places are warmer. Of course warming denialists do themselves no favors by continually conflating weather and climate.

Deconstructing Social Darwinism

Deconstructing Social Darwinism. Interesting series. See Razib’s followup at Gene Expression.

Magnetism

Magnetism is complex. Especially with 5th graders.

Philosophy and Demographic Groups

Philosophy shouldn’t appeal only to one demographic group. “It suggests that you are merely useful for fulfilling that group’s agenda.” What does this say about Marx?

Latest Philosopher’s Carnival

I’ve not followed these for a while. But the latest philosopher’s carnival is up. I especially like the question of how to take natural kinds since that ends up being the point of controversy in Heidegger’s notion of de-worlded entities. I think the way it’s considered in most analytic philosophy is too narrow though.

Heidegger on Dewey

Despite having a lot of parallels with the pragmatism movement Heidegger had a very dim view of American philosophy and Dewey in particular. Pragmatism in general but Dewey in particular thoughts that philosophy had to include all the other kinds of experiences we have beyond what philosophy had traditionally considered. This was a scandal in [...]

Dewey on Science

“Dewey on Science” (PDF) It’s a bit of a mystery to me why pragmatism and the pragmatists aren’t a bigger force in contemporary philosophy. There’s been a renaissance of pragmatic scholarship but that hasn’t necessarily leached out in areas beyond semiotics. (Although Lee Smolin is a bit of a Peircean)

Beyond Realism and Idealism

I’ve been reading, off and on, various blogs by speculative realists. Since I’m still recovering my health I’ve not delved into any of their formal works yet. (Plus I still have some Badiou and Davidson to finish before starting any new projects) Still, some of the blog posts, especially by Harman, really make me think. [...]
