Various Thoughts

Whew. It’s been a busy few weeks for me. New baby girl. New factory outlet store. Lots of other things going on. I hope you don’t mind but I’d like to do a sort of “catch all” for stuff a bit long for the sidebar.

First let me say that Safari 5′s new “Reader” mode is a most welcome tool for reading philosophy and other academic blogs with poorly chosen fonts and colors. Yes, all you inverted text blogs I’m looking at you. Small green or white fonts on black aren’t easy to read. Reader does what the Readability bookmark used to do. It basically takes the main post, removes all the extraneous stuff (like ads), and displays it in a different larger font.

Unfortunately Apple’s font choices for Safari weren’t idea, but it’s easy to modify the css it uses. (Just edit the file /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Resources/Reader.html) I changed my copy of Safari to display using left justified 13 pt Georgia.

Next there’s been a lot of interesting discussion of OOP among various blogs. I’m still reading some of Harman’s work and so can’t say too much. I have to admit that thus far I’m pretty sympathetic to to Gary William’s critique at Minds and Brains. It just seems to me that folks aren’t reading Heidegger well and aren’t taking deworlding seriously. (Also see Gary’s response to an other of Graham’s correlationist critiques) I’d just add that some of Heidegger’s reading of Schelling are rather interesting to deal with the issue of object – object interactions. (i.e. the question of freedom and pantheism in Schelling) I might post on that later this week if I have time. Especially since Schelling and Peirce have a lot in common so this is one of the few places I can engage them in a fairly direct manner.

Congrats on all counts, Clark. (And I’m ordering some chocolate.)

If you’re in the Provo area you’ll have to stop by the factory outlet. We have up on the wall many of the paintings used in the chocolate boxes along with some fantastic photos Art took while inspecting plantations. We’ve also brought on a pastry chef who has been on the Food Network numerous times. She’s making filled chocolates, truffles, palets d’or as well as brownies and other things. All using our chocolate. The outlet store is down near UVU, just on the other side of the freeway. You can find directions here.

Congratulations, Dad … and even though I can’t eat chocolate for the time being, I’m drooling just reading your comment #2. Oh, man …

Congratulation Clark.

I’m still hoping to win some free chocolate, and for access to the digital audio at the SMPT site.

But you are busy with very important things – that’s good.

I’m pretty sure ARJ gave me some of that chocolate and I didn’t like it and I feel very guilty because it’s probably expensive and he did like it. I feel I should send him some money.

My wife and I will be coming by the outlet as part of our date on Friday. I am excited.

You’ll have to try some of the other varieties Anne. Everyone has a different palet and I’m sure we have some that will wow you. I know we have some brownies down here right now that have wowed everyone who tries them.

Clark,

I was nice meeting you tonight. Good chocolate, too. My wife might still be a Hersheys gal. She is an egalitarian when it comes to chocolate.
