Balancing retention and sacrifice. A very interesting issue in Mormonism.
#Why Is It So Hard to Figure Out What Mormons Believe? Great post from a brand new Mormon blog over at Patheos. I wish every reporter would read this before writing on Mormons.
#A Motley Vision on Learning. A nice discussion of pro-intellectual thrusts in Mormonism with the few anti-intellectual elements.
#A Heideggerian response to David Chalmers. Consciousness is not a thing with properties the way a door has properties. A bit of pragmatism thrown in to boot.
#New Scientist has a religion issue up. Most of it is old stuff if you've followed even superficially the cognitive science of religion. I did like the interview with the atheist suggesting atheists grab what's good within religion. Honestly I think most atheists do this already - especially larger movements. Many forget that much of religion consists of applied basic human cognitive processes. We do it instinctively much like children change pigeon languages into more robust languages.
#Peirce's phenomenology and Being as the totality of appearing. Interesting to read along side Joseph Ransdell's "Is Peirce a Phenomenologist?" which attempts to note the differences from Husserl's phenomenology.
#Is Ketamine really an effective anti-depressant or is it all a placebo effect? Interesting critique about the null hypothesis. I didn't realize the problem with the double blind studies. (i.e. the placebo didn't have tranquilizer effects like ketamine)
#Depression: An Evolutionary Byproduct of Immune System? Something else was pointed out to me recently. If the immune system doesn't have something to fight it often turns on the body. Thus the increase in auto-immune diseases as we become healthier and cleaner.
#Levi Bryan has a nice blog post about Adam Miller's Speculative Grace. It has a great discussion of truth as assembled. I suspect Mormons reading it will recognize a certain way truth is sometimes used in LDS testimonies.
#The Heidegger film Being in the World is available for download now. It's a bit pricey (it's a purchase rather than a rental).

Williamson on Science
Williamson is one of my favorite philosophers – typically for his views rather than necessarily his arguments. He had a post at the New York Times today on Naturalism. I rather liked it even if it’s old hat to most. I don’t think most people realize the problems under naturalism. Lots of rejoinders at various [...]
History of Goodwin’s Law
History of Goodwin’s Law. (That’s the law that any discussion will, after a certain amount of time, bring up Nazis as an analogy)
