Summit Lake is a reasonably popular ski tour. It is not, however, a popular ice
climbing area. As far as I know, only one party has ventured past the lake to
look for a fabled huge free hanging ice cicle. While no one has found this free
standing dagger, searches have discovered a nice ampitheatre of 3 or 4 routes
just past the Summit Lake drainage. Approach from the end of the Cameron Lake
road, up to Cameron Lake, before taking a well marked trail left to Summit Lake.
This is about 6km, and gains a fair bit of elevation. At the lake, cut directly
across it to follow the drainage on the south side. About 100m from the lake,
the tiny creek flows into an overhanging bowl. Fanklin Motel is the climb fed
by the creek, Levi's Ankle is to the climber's left. These routes are quite reasonable
climbs. They are fairly sustained for their grades. It looks like a few mixed
routes are liable to form up in the overhanging caves and corners.
