ST. MARY'S FALLS

Low : Runable ???
Medium : Port

This falls is one of the prime tourist destinations in Glacier National Park. Unfortunately it will likely never become a prime kayaking destination. The falls are a set of twin 15 to 20 foot drops in close succession. The top drop makes things pretty much unrunnable. The falls flow are directed into the side wall, which looks to have some dangerous undercuts. Above the second drop, some wood is located directly in the center. The pool here is more forgiving, but around the corner above the bridge, the river feeds head long into a vertical wall with a severe undercut and sizeable eddy. Your best option is to get out above unamed on the river left, and head straight up to the trail. Extremely confident paddlers can run the drop directly above St. Mary's and then eddy out on river left, making a much shorter portage.
