UPPER TIER
The upper tier at Drywood is an excellent crag for climbers making the transition from indoor climing. The majority of routes are of a moderate difficulty, well protected and easily top roped. the rock is fairly abrasive, providing technical clibing on near vertical faces. Moves generally involve long reaches between odd shaped pockets. Views from the crag are incomparable. The only downside is the long slog up the talus that is required to get to these routes. Expect 45 minutes fro the second landing.
Climbs at the upper tier receive much more sun than those on the lower tier. This still means that they only get full sunlight in the late afternoon. While still strong, winds here also tend to be a bit less gusty than those by the lower tier. Ram's Head- a large rock pinnacle is prominent along the trail from the bottom of the valley.
At the large boulder in the usually dry creekbed past the second landing, head up the creek bottom for about 50m. Numerous cairns mark the switchbacks trhough the talus slope. The trail becomes harder to follow through the broken ledges up high. Try your best to follow the cairns as the trail tends left along a grassy ledge. This will help prevent the formation of numerous indistinct trails. If all else fails, just head towards the "Ram's Head".
