FERNIE

Introduction

I will be honest, I don't know much about the climbing scene in the area. Historically the Lethbridge area climbers and Fernie crowd haven't mixed. They don't mix much kayaking either. Fernie climbers have typically traveled down to the excellent rock in the StoneHill region. In the pass, Fernie local Eric Hoogstraten has done lots of unrecorded work putting up climbs at Knob Hill, and Wedge.

What I know of established climbs in the area comes from chat pages, word of mouth, and road trips into the area for other purposes. Some of the stuff I have seen is great. While the Hartley Pass area has some established sport climbs, and some good alpine potential, the best rock climbing appears to be on the logging roads south of Fernie in the Morrisey Road area.

Rock

The outcroppings are typically limestone. Rock along the Lodgepole road appears to be just over a pitch in Length. Up on Mt. Broadhead things look to be about 2 to 3 pitches long.
