THE GAP

Introduction

Located about 30 minutes north of the town of Lundbreck, the Gap is a popular recreational area for a variety of outdoor users. Only recently has any sustained climbing activity occured here. Due to this, there are very few established routes. However, the potential for new routes is outstanding

The Gap is located along the front range of the Livingstone Mountains. A well used, and well maintained gravel road leaves the highway and passes through a beautiful region of foothills. As the road enters the mountains, a large pass is visible. This is "The Gap". The Oldman river flows along the right (west) side of the road. The large pools and clear water give the area it's unique character. Unfortunately, it also makes the approach to the huge limestone cliffs on the west bank difficult. Luckily, good climbing can be found on teh east side of the river, a short and easy approach from the road.

Past the Gap, one encounters Highway 940. South leads to Blairmore, North to Kanaskis. The country here is very reminiscient of the tree covered prairies found around southern Montana. Adventurous people should be able to discover quite a few lare limestone outcroppings.

Getting There

The Gap is located about one and a half hours from Lethbridge, or 30 minutes north of the town of Lundbreck.

From Lethbridge, head east along Highway #3 towards the Crowsnest Pass. A few kilometers past the twon of Lundbreck, higway 22 to Longview takes off to the north. Go north for 26km to Maycroft. This Hamlet can be recognized by the single large red building / gas station on the left side of the road. This building is located immediately in front of a bridge over the Oldman River. Turn westw onto the side road in front of this building (highway 517). Travel west along highway 517 for about 26km. Here the road enters the mountains. The climbing lies just past a haripin corner where large limestone walls are visible across the river.

If going to the Reservation Slab, park directly in front of the cliff, well off the road. A surprisingly large amount of traffic frequents this area. Camping is found on the right hand side of the road about 1.5km past the haripin corner into the Gap. Other climbing is found high up on the ridge, just opposite the Reservation Slab.

If traveling from the Crownsest Pass, go to the town of Coleman and take Highway 940 north towards the Kananaskis. About 5km past the bridge over Vicary Creek, and just before a second bridge, a road leads off to the right. This is Highway 517. Follow this east for 4km to the climbing areas.
