PASS CREEK SLAB
Introduction
The Pass Creek Slab is a small protrusion of dolomite that is located on the east side of Pass (Blackiston) creek. The approach is very short, the ambience refresheing, and the rock quite solid. The only disadvantage of the area is the lack of reliable protection. Intermediate trad climbers should find placeing portection challenging, but not impossible. Novices may feel farily nervous heading off on long run outs off dubious pieces. In the past, climbers have often used knife blades to make the climbs safe. If you need to put in a pin to reassure yourself, please leave it in situi for others to use.
Due to the poor protection, this area has mainly been used as a top roping venue. Unfortunately, the only solid anchor is the telphone pole about 7m away. If you plan to top rope, bring lots of webbing. At the bottom a large ledge about 2m above the water provides a nice location from which to belay.
Getting There
Drive up the Red Rock Highway, past the initial switchbacks onto the prairie plateau. There is a large pullout on the left of the road. Park here and walk along the horse trail to where the telephone poles cross the river to the Golf Course. The climbs are located immediately below the last telephone pole.
Rock
The rock is fairly solid, although helmet use is still recommended. Some of teh larger flakes are not overly stable, so climbers should exercise some caution when exploring routes for the first time. Protection consists of small nuts and RP's.
