Tenses and Times
January 6, 2005

Wo's Weblog has a pretty good, if brief, discussion of the problem of mixing issues of tense with issues of time or worlds. This pops up in discussions of four-dimensionalism. The problem is if one speaks of the universe as a substance that is four dimensional, then ought we say things like "will be true" with respect to this substance? It is the problem of hidden temporal assumptions that conflict with the entity being discussed. In the comments someone suggests that McTaggart's approach to time may be a problem of this sort with tenses. (I'm not sure I agree there, but I'd have to think about it before commenting)
