Philosopher's Carnival
January 16, 2005

The latest Philosopher's Carnival is up. I have an entry in it myself this month.

Some of my favorite entries include the discussion of humanism in philosophy. That includes the plea, "that we should move closer to the humanistic pole today, reviving certain aspects of Renaissance humanism." Being a sucker for Renaissance philosophy, how could I ignore that? On the other hand the topic is ethics, to which we all already know my expertise (or lack thereof). Despite being very interested in Heidegger I sometime confess to delving into the more "scientific" approach to philosophy.

An other good one is on Galileo. I blogged about him way back in the early days of this blog. Galileo is used by many anti-religious proponents of what amounts to scientism quite a bit. That's always manage to get my goat. It's not that there aren't lessons to be learned from the Galileo affair. However the actual events are far more complex than the way they are typically presented. The link in this month's Philosophy carnival treats some of the counter-myths and people opposing the myth of Galileo as martyr for science have proposed. All in all a very well done post.
