The latest FARMS review of books is up. One interesting article is on some Evangelical attacks on LDS theology using the notion of the big bang. I've discussed that a bit here and Blake Ostler responded to the same paper reviewed here. But it is a nice overview of the issue. "The Big Bang: What Does It Mean For Us?" I plan on getting to about a half dozen things I've been planning on writing up here. Not the least of which finishing Blake's book and perhaps starting a few others.
These are just typical cases of Evangelicals picking and choosing which conclusions they want to accept from science. A few example are in order:
1) Genetic evidence shows that the Hebrews were not the primary ancestors of the American Indians. This same genetic evidence shows quite clearly lines or evolutionary ancestry among different species and that chimpanzees are %98.5 the same as us in genetic makeup
2) Quantum fluctuations shows how not everything is determined and that we can still have free will of some sort. It also shows that many things can be uncaused, indeterminable and unpredictable even by God.
3) Plate techtonics shows that the earth was once one single continent, just like the bible says. It also show that is took billions of years to happen.
4) Carbon dating has been used to "prove" the date and location of many bible stories showing how reliable the bible is as history. It also shows that things have been happening a lot longer than 10,000 years.
The list can go on and on, see your local Christian bookstore for details where they have numerous books which prove the truth about God and the Bible through recently discovered science. It is, however, also sad to see the same genre of books in LDS stores.
Just to add a few caveats, not all Evangelicals do this. We don't want to engage in strawmanship when we dislike it so much when done to us. Also (2) is a complex argument. Further we have to make a distinction between caused/determined and foreknown. A subtle but important point.
I agree.
