Organize iPhone
Movement: Mac app to organize your iPhone pages. Reportedly this ability will be part of the next version of iTunes. Plus it requires a jailbreak. But if you can’t wait check it out. Be aware there are some really buggy screen redraw issues if you use the scroll bars.
Better Logging
I mentioned in my last hint that I should expand it and add better logging. Today that’s just what I’ll do. This is one of those things I really should have done ages ago, since it’s so easy. But I just never got around to it. This is straightforward to add to other projects. Normally [...]
Proper Cropping
Proper cropping for Automator. Lets you specify not only the size to crop to but the top corner of the crop. Why Apple didn’t include this in their crop action escapes me. I find that much I used to use Graphics Converter for I now use Automator for.
Fixing IMAP Mail Unread Counts
OK, this script fixes a problem in Mail that’s had me pulling my hair out for years. I’d come up with dozens of scripts trying to fix this one and nothing worked. Then someone gave a solution at Ars which had me slapping my head. It was so easy I can’t believe I didn’t think [...]
10 WiFi Boosts
10 WiFi Boosts and boost your WiFi with a straw (and a soldering iron)
xGPS
A short review of the xGPS. As I mentioned in my Jailbreak post this is one of the best reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. While my posts on jailbreaking make it seem like Linux at it’s worst, that’s more because I’m interested in doing some useful scripting of the phone. Few would want to do [...]
Jailbreaking 3.0.1: Third
OK, a few more discoveries that I figured I’d share. First I’ve realized one thing about much of Cydia. There’s not a lot of good documentation for applications or plugins. Many are “works in progress.” Quite a few require you to ssh in and modify files. Think Linux at its worst. That’s not that big [...]
Jailbreaking 3.0.1: Second Thoughts
Yesterday I talked about my initial thoughts jailbreaking my new iPhone. It wasn’t completely knew since I’d done it with my old 3G last year. And I’m not having second thoughts in the sense of regretting it. Just some things others might appreciate. First I didn’t mention AptBackup. Install it. This is a nice little [...]
Writing iPhone Apps in Python
Writing iPhone applications in Python. Thinking about it… And it seems to me that it’d just be easier to write in Obj-C.
Jailbreaking 3.0.1: First Thoughts
OK, I broke down last night and jailbroke my iPhone. (Instructions and program for a 3GS is here) Why? Well I had been holding off until 3.1 was released. But I heard through the grapevine that the 3.1 betas had already been jailbroken so there was no worry. Second I needed to tether I just [...]
Debugging Python
OK, TextMate is nice. Indeed I really love writing Python in it. However debugging with TextMate and Python is still lacking. Even with the extra plug-ins. My business partner, who is just learning Python, suggested checking out Komodo. So I am.
Unlock
Unlock your iPhone. I got tired of waiting for 3.1 and did it tonight.
MacPorts & Python
I finally gave up in frustration and uninstalled all the MacPorts versions of Python. There was just too much confusion between the Apple and MacPorts versions. A few people had told me in the past that they reached the point where MacPort was more trouble than it was worth. I may still use it to [...]
Palm’s App Store Restrictions
Palm’s app store rules. Much better than Apple’s although the limits of the SDK probably mean developers couldn’t do as much. We’ll see if their openness actually lasts when the first quasi-porn app appears.
